You should always think long-term—with any foundational build or even many elements of design. A small price to pay upfront will save you thousands of dollars down the line, and it is worth the investment into your future.   

Donate & Recycle

A huge percentage of a house or old space is reusable. Consider who you can donate materials too other than just adding to your local landfill. Is there an organization that you care about that could use such materials? How can you benefit others or your community with your rebuild. This is also a great way to save some money in recycling your unneeded materials prior to construction. As for everything else- remember to recycle!

Utilize your Contractor’s Resources

That’s what your contract is there for! Ask them questions, ask for their contacts or their advice. If there is an element missing, for example, see if there is anything leftover from other jobs. It’s a sure-fire way to cut costs and get the most professional advice possible when building your project. You have an opportunity to save in material costs, modernize your design, or make decisions that will stand the test of time other than just looking nice in the short term.

Make Decisions Early

It really helps to browse different fixtures before the planning stage begins. The goal is not to dip into your contractor’s allowance estimate, and to make decisions on what appliances and fixtures you like and get a good grip on their cost and where you can find them if they’re available in multiple locations.
